- Students read a skit on the Dalai Lama &amp;amp; Tibetan Buddhism.&amp;nbsp; Students also read a handout on Hinduism and troubles between Sikhs and Hindus in India.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday &lt;/strong&gt;- We reviewed main ideas of Hinduism, Buddhism &amp;amp; Sikhism.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students learned the basic principles of Shintoism (Japan) and Confucianism (China).&amp;nbsp; Students viewed a Power Point of some famous religious sites in the region.&amp;nbsp; Describe the causes and effects of pollution on the Yangtze and Ganges Rivers. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Monday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students went to the computer lab to research answers to questions about the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam in China.&amp;nbsp; HOMEWORK:&amp;nbsp; If you did not finish the questions in class, you need to finish these for homework and turn them in tomorrow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday - &lt;/strong&gt;We reviewed main ideas from yesterday's assignment on the Yangtze River.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students read an article on a overview of the major problems with the Three Gorges Dam.&amp;nbsp; The overview included viewpoints from critics and the government of China. Students made a T chart to fill in the 2 different points of view on 3 main issues:&amp;nbsp; environmental, population resettlement &amp;amp; saving historic sites along the Yangtze.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday - &lt;/strong&gt;We went over points of view on the T chart from yesterday.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, we played 2 rounds of a following directions game - first round was only about following directions, second round was a social studies review. Describe the impact climate and location has on population distribution in Southern and Eastern Asia. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: blue;"&gt;b. Describe how the mountain, desert, and water features of Southern and Eastern Asia have affected the population in terms of where people live, the types of work they do, and how they travel. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Monday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students in 3rd, 5th, and 8th periods used the data from Friday's activity to create bar and circle graphs (w/ partners) on population, literacy rates, life expectancy, religions and arable land of South Asia and East/SE Asia.&amp;nbsp; Students in 6th and 7th completed a handout using the data from Friday's activity and a separate handout.&amp;nbsp; All students will finish the handout (if necessary) tomorrow.&amp;nbsp; NHW.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday -&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp; Students were in the computer lab to complete their GA College 411 profile.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday - &lt;/strong&gt;We completed/reviewed answers to the Subcontinent Content handout from Monday.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students read an article about monsoons and filled in a graphic organizer (for a grade).&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students read part of an article from Smithsonian magazine on the pollution of the Ganges River in India.&amp;nbsp; After reading, they filled in an "Open Mind" graphic organizer on some of the main problems listed in the article.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Friday - &lt;/strong&gt;We reviewed information on pollution of the Ganges.&amp;nbsp; Students came up with 5 facts/ideas they remembered from our study of the Middle East region and Africa.&amp;nbsp; Each student told me their facts and I put them in wordle.net to make a wordle for each class - as a review. NHW&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday&lt;/strong&gt; - I graded student sponge pages.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, we went over the correct answers for 1/2 the atlas packet (from yesterday).&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Then we looked @ how the earthquake happened &amp;amp; how earthquakes cause tsunamis.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students viewed pictures of the devastation near Sendai, Japan - photos from cnn.com, earthquake diagram from nytimes.com.&amp;nbsp; Notebooks will be turned in tomorrow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students turned in their old notebooks (Govt/Econ of Africa Unit) and received a new TOC. We finished correcting the Asia atlas packet from Monday.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students labeled a political and physical map of Southern and Eastern Asia.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday &lt;/strong&gt;- Students completed a vocabulary sheet on the geography of Southern and Eastern Asia and wrote sentences with six of the vocabulary words.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Friday &lt;/strong&gt;- Students went to computer lab 906 to look up information/statistics on countries of South and East Asia (geography &amp;amp; people).&amp;nbsp; - Students were put in groups to work on a mystery country activity on economics.&amp;nbsp; Group members were given population, size &amp;amp; natural resource information on 5 countries.&amp;nbsp; The goal was to figure out each of the 5 countries and then rank them from richest to poorest.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday &lt;/strong&gt;- We discussed Wednesday's activity - focusing on the fact that not all wealthy nations (Singapore) have natural resources and nations with copious natural resources (Nigeria) are not always wealthy.&amp;nbsp; We also discussed factors that contribute to long term economic growth of a country.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students began a class work assignment on economic growth.&amp;nbsp; HOMEWORK: REMEMBER TO FIND A POLITICAL CARTOON YOU UNDERSTAND AND CAN ANALYZE. DUE TUES MAR 8TH.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Friday&lt;/strong&gt; - Students finished the classwork assignment from yesterday and turned it in.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, they read two scenarios on voluntary trade and answered basic questions.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students read a current events article and filled in a graphic organizer (Concrete detail + Commentary).&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students worked in the computer lab to fill in a chart on some basic information about the people and governments of selected African nations.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday - &lt;/strong&gt;We went over the chart from yesterday - discussed some aspects &amp;amp; made sure everyone had complete information.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students used the information on the chart to come up with 5 higher level questions &amp;amp; highlighted a handout on beginning and end of apartheid in South Africa.&amp;nbsp; Students received their study guide for FRIDAY'S test and we went over this.&amp;nbsp; Also, notebooks need to be organized as I am giving a very brief notebook "quiz"&amp;nbsp; - We reviewed the social/cultural, economic, &amp;amp; political effects of the Scramble for Africa (using graphic organizer from Friday's activity).&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, we looked at a table of the agricultural &amp;amp; mineral resources found in Africa.&amp;nbsp; Then students completed an activity on how the SFA is like a house robbery and how it is like a house cleaning.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday&lt;/strong&gt; - Students shared answers from yesterday's assignment - how the Scramble for Africa is like a house robbery and like a house cleaning.&amp;nbsp; Students then completed an personal analogy assignment.&amp;nbsp; They were to imagine they were a piece of land in Africa containing a valuable resource and write how they look &amp;amp; feel.&amp;nbsp; This assignment will be taken for a grade based on following directions, descriptiveness, &amp;amp; imagery.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday&lt;/strong&gt; - We discussed the definition of nationalism &amp;amp; examples.&amp;nbsp; I briefly gave students some background information on Africa during WWII.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students were split in to groups of 3-5 and each was given a narrative to read.&amp;nbsp; The narratives were parables and speeches by African leaders around the time of independence.&amp;nbsp; After reading, students had to discuss w/ groups, answer questions and discuss w/ class.&amp;nbsp;NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students were given outline notes on African independence (dates, colonial power, etc.).&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Wednesday&lt;/b&gt; - Students worked individually or with a partner to read first person accounts of the slave trade.&amp;nbsp; As they read each account, they filled in facts on a graphic organizer.&amp;nbsp; The graphic organizer was the advantages and disadvantages of the slave trade for both Europeans and Africans.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Thursday&lt;/b&gt; - We went over the graphic organizer from yesterday.&amp;nbsp; Afterward, students used the World History Atlases to complete an worksheet on European imperialism in Africa. distribution, poor soil, deforestation &amp;amp; desertification.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Monday - &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;I was out sick&lt;/em&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Students exchanged current events articles and answered each others comprehension questions.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students began watching a National Geographic video on animals and the environment in Madagascar.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday&lt;/strong&gt; - Students finished the video.&amp;nbsp; Final quiz for this semester will be THIS Friday, December 17th.&amp;nbsp; The quiz will be over the physical geography of Africa (study the phys. geo map and countries).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday - &lt;/strong&gt;I handed out an emergency split assignment to students - just in case....Afterwards, I gave them a study guide for Friday's quiz.&amp;nbsp; Students looked over the maps and environmental issues in Africa to help them study.&amp;nbsp; Then we played a game to see which team knew the physical features and countries better.&lt;br /&gt;HOMEWORK:&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, we discussed environmental problems and health problems we face in the US to compare these to the problems faced by Africans.&amp;nbsp; Students watched a video clip from SCIS on environmental &amp;amp; health problems facing Africa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Remember Current Events #3 is due next Monday, December 13th&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday - &lt;/strong&gt;Discussed the yesterday's video clip.&amp;nbsp; Graded atlast packet from last Thursday.&amp;nbsp; Read and filled in an Environmental Issues chart.&lt;br /&gt;Go to &lt;a href="http://www.wwf.org/"&gt;http://www.wwf.org/&lt;/a&gt; and scroll to the bottom.&amp;nbsp; Look for the box at the bottom that says "Find Your Inner Animal".&amp;nbsp; Take the quiz (it's 8 questions &amp;amp; you have to give your email address to take the quiz).&amp;nbsp; Write down which animal you are.&amp;nbsp; - Students were given a project today - creating a children's government picture book. They were given a handout in class. The handout can be found under the "assignments" section of this blog - if you need an extra or are absent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday - &lt;/strong&gt;I handed out a study guide/list of topics for Friday's test.&amp;nbsp; A copy can be found under the "assignments" section of the blog.&amp;nbsp; We discussed the history topics - students took notes on the study guide as necessary.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students were given time to continue workin gon the government picture book project.&amp;nbsp; HOMEWORK:&amp;nbsp; Study for Friday's test and work on children's book - as necessary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday&lt;/strong&gt; - I was absent.&amp;nbsp; Students read a handout from InspirEd titled "Democracy Rising"&amp;nbsp; which explained democracy, the importance of democracy &amp;amp; the challenges &amp;amp; possibilites&amp;nbsp;it faces in Middle Eastern countries.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, each student wrote a persuasive paragraph (no less than 8 sentences) on democracy in the Middle East.&amp;nbsp; If time allowed, they worked on the government picture book project.&lt;br /&gt;HOMEWORK: STUDY FOR FRIDAY'S TEST AND WORK ON PICTURE BOOK PROJECT&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday&lt;/strong&gt; - Students got in groups in class to prepare for tomorrow's class debate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tuesday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students participated in an in class debate.&amp;nbsp; Half of the class had the topic of land (Israeli/Palestinian) and the other half debated Operation Iraqi Freedom (should US have invaded or not).&amp;nbsp; This was our first debate of the year so it was more for practice not for a grade.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wednesday &lt;/strong&gt;- We went over the Fact or Opinion worksheet from last week.&amp;nbsp; Then we discussed pros/cons of yesterday's class debate - what to improve for next time.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, students started a worksheet (w/ article)&amp;nbsp; on the current peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians.&amp;nbsp; NHW&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thursday - &lt;/strong&gt;Students finished yesterday's worksheet on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.&amp;nbsp; Afterwards, they worked with a partner to answer questions about oil production and consumption using charts and graphs.&amp;nbsp;
