a. Compare and contrast the prominent religions in Southern and Eastern Asia: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Shintoism and the philosophy of Confucianism.

Monday - Students received a Comparative Religions Chart (for Southern Asia). After studying the chart, they answered questions and we went over these. NHW

Tuesday - Students read a skit on the Dalai Lama & Tibetan Buddhism. Students also read a handout on Hinduism and troubles between Sikhs and Hindus in India. NHW

Wednesday - We reviewed main ideas of Hinduism, Buddhism & Sikhism. Afterwards, students learned the basic principles of Shintoism (Japan) and Confucianism (China). Students viewed a Power Point of some famous religious sites in the region. Finally, we discussed the importance of meditation in Hinduism & Buddhism & began working on a mandala. NHW

SS7G10 the student will discuss environmental issues across Southern and Eastern Asia.
a. Describe the causes and effects of pollution on the Yangtze and Ganges Rivers.

Monday - Students went to the computer lab to research answers to questions about the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam in China. HOMEWORK: If you did not finish the questions in class, you need to finish these for homework and turn them in tomorrow.

Tuesday - We reviewed main ideas from yesterday's assignment on the Yangtze River. Afterwards, students read an article on a overview of the major problems with the Three Gorges Dam. The overview included viewpoints from critics and the government of China. Students made a T chart to fill in the 2 different points of view on 3 main issues: environmental, population resettlement & saving historic sites along the Yangtze. NHW

Wednesday - We went over points of view on the T chart from yesterday. Afterwards, we played 2 rounds of a following directions game - first round was only about following directions, second round was a social studies review. NHW

Thursday - Students watched the first part of PBS Story of India DVD on the beginnings of Buddhism in India & the Silk Road/trade. NHW

Friday - Students watched parts of the second disk of Story of India (Taj Mahal & a little about independence). NHW

Monday - Students in 3rd, 5th, and 8th periods used the data from Friday's activity to create bar and circle graphs (w/ partners) on population, literacy rates, life expectancy, religions and arable land of South Asia and East/SE Asia. Students in 6th and 7th completed a handout using the data from Friday's activity and a separate handout. All students will finish the handout (if necessary) tomorrow. NHW.

Tuesday - Students were in the computer lab to complete their GA College 411 profile. NHW

Wednesday - We completed/reviewed answers to the Subcontinent Content handout from Monday. Afterwards, students read an article about monsoons and filled in a graphic organizer (for a grade). NHW

Thursday - Students read part of an article from Smithsonian magazine on the pollution of the Ganges River in India. After reading, they filled in an "Open Mind" graphic organizer on some of the main problems listed in the article. NHW

Friday - We reviewed information on pollution of the Ganges. Students came up with 5 facts/ideas they remembered from our study of the Middle East region and Africa. Each student told me their facts and I put them in wordle.net to make a wordle for each class - as a review. Afterwards, we reviewed key vocabulary from earlier this year. NHW

Monday - We began a new unit on the geography of Southern and Eastern Asia. Students worked on an atlas packet to locate the countries & capitals & read and fill in information on population, climate, etc. Students also received grades on Friday's test and overall average in my class. NHW

Tuesday - I graded student sponge pages. Afterwards, we went over the correct answers for 1/2 the atlas packet (from yesterday). Then we looked @ how the earthquake happened & how earthquakes cause tsunamis. Afterwards, students viewed pictures of the devastation near Sendai, Japan - photos from cnn.com, earthquake diagram from nytimes.com. Notebooks will be turned in tomorrow.

Wednesday - Students turned in their old notebooks (Govt/Econ of Africa Unit) and received a new TOC. We finished correcting the Asia atlas packet from Monday. Afterwards, students labeled a political and physical map of Southern and Eastern Asia. NHW

Thursday - Students completed a vocabulary sheet on the geography of Southern and Eastern Asia and wrote sentences with six of the vocabulary words. NHW

Friday - Students went to computer lab 906 to look up information/statistics on countries of South and East Asia (geography & people). We will graph some of this information on class in Monday. **If you were absent today a copy of the handout we used in class can be found under "Assignments/Handouts" on the right side of my blog. NHW

Monday - We continued the activity on trade (Mrs. Brown & Mr. D) from Friday. Students answered comprehension questions then we discussed. HOMEWORK: POLITICAL CARTOON

Tuesday - Students brought in political cartoons and posted them on the bulletin board. Great job!!
Afterwards, I handed out a study guide for Friday's test.

Wednesday - We did an "survival" economic activity involving opportunity costs about being lost in the wilderness of Alaska - this was group work. TEST FRIDAY

Monday - I was out. Students worked on CRCT practice questions. NHW

Tuesday - Students were given a political cartoon assignment - due Tuesday, March 8th. Afterwards, we watched a photo slideshow of Gaddahfi from Time.com. We also went over the correct answers for the CRCT practice from Monday. NHW

Wednesday - Students were put in groups to work on a mystery country activity on economics. Group members were given population, size & natural resource information on 5 countries. The goal was to figure out each of the 5 countries and then rank them from richest to poorest. NHW

Thursday - We discussed Wednesday's activity - focusing on the fact that not all wealthy nations (Singapore) have natural resources and nations with copious natural resources (Nigeria) are not always wealthy. We also discussed factors that contribute to long term economic growth of a country. Afterwards, students began a class work assignment on economic growth. HOMEWORK: REMEMBER TO FIND A POLITICAL CARTOON YOU UNDERSTAND AND CAN ANALYZE. DUE TUES MAR 8TH.

Friday - Students finished the classwork assignment from yesterday and turned it in. Afterwards, they read two scenarios on voluntary trade and answered basic questions. We went over the answers as a class and briefly discussed the scenarios. HOMEWORK: POLITICAL CARTOON ASSIGNMENT.

Monday - Students turned in their most recent notebook and took old papers out of file folders (from 1st semester). New TOC (Unit: Govt + Economics of Africa). Students completed a handout on post independence rulers in Africa. NHW

Tuesday - We briefly reviewed the 4 types of governments (oligarchy, autocracy, democracy, theocracy). Afterwards, students read a current events article and filled in a graphic organizer (Concrete detail + Commentary). NHW

Wednesday - Students worked in the computer lab to fill in a chart on some basic information about the people and governments of selected African nations. NHW

Thursday - We went over the chart from yesterday - discussed some aspects & made sure everyone had complete information. Afterwards, students used the information on the chart to come up with 5 higher level questions & one observation about the data. NHW

Friday - I handed back the scan tron portion of the African history test - we went over the correct answers as a class. NHW

Monday - We went over the BrainPoP apartheid activity from Friday. Afterwards, students completed a crossword puzzle to review terms/ideas from the unit. HOMEWORK: TEST (OVER AFRICAN HISTORY/DEVELOPMENT THIS FRIDAY)

Tuesday - Read & highlighted a handout on beginning and end of apartheid in South Africa. Students received their study guide for FRIDAY'S test and we went over this. Also, notebooks need to be organized as I am giving a very brief notebook "quiz" (open notebook) on Thursday instead of grading notebooks as usual. HOMEWORK: STUDY for test & ORGANIZE notebook

Wednesday - We went over correct answers to a practice CRCT test on the African History/Development Unit. Students did a Think Pair Share activity to review for the test. HOMEWORK: Notebook Quiz tomorrow - notebook needs to be in order. TEST FRIDAY - STUDY!

Thursday - Students took a notebook quiz. HOMEWORK: STUDY

Friday - Test over African History/Development. Activity on famine & hunger - to introduce the next unit on Africa.

Monday - Brief review of last week's material then students copied a few notes - important points from the skit on Kenya last week. Then a brief intro to South Africa and students began reading information to create a timeline for South African history.
HOMEWORK: USING APPROPRIATE NEWS SOURCES, FIND AND READ AN ARTICLE ON EGYPT, TUNISIA, SUDAN OR ALGERIA. SUMMARIZE THE ARTICLE AND BRING IT TO CLASS ON THURSDAY TO DISCUSS. I JUST NEED THE URL - NOT A COPY OF THE ARTICLE.

Monday - We reviewed the social/cultural, economic, & political effects of the Scramble for Africa (using graphic organizer from Friday's activity). Afterwards, we looked at a table of the agricultural & mineral resources found in Africa. Then students completed an activity on how the SFA is like a house robbery and how it is like a house cleaning. NHW

Tuesday - Students shared answers from yesterday's assignment - how the Scramble for Africa is like a house robbery and like a house cleaning. Students then completed an personal analogy assignment. They were to imagine they were a piece of land in Africa containing a valuable resource and write how they look & feel. This assignment will be taken for a grade based on following directions, descriptiveness, & imagery. NHW

Wednesday - We discussed the definition of nationalism & examples. I briefly gave students some background information on Africa during WWII. Afterwards, students were split in to groups of 3-5 and each was given a narrative to read. The narratives were parables and speeches by African leaders around the time of independence. After reading, students had to discuss w/ groups, answer questions and discuss w/ class. NHW

Thursday - Students were given outline notes on African independence (dates, colonial power, etc.). Afterwards, students were chosen to read a skit about Jomo Kenyatta and the independence movement in Kenya against the British. NHW

Friday - I was absent. Students watched and took notes on a PBS video titled "Love in the Sahel". NHW

Monday - MLK Holiday

Tuesday - We went over/corrected answers to the African history atlas packet (from Wed. 1/5/11) and the African history background questions (from Thurs. 1/6/11). NHW

Wednesday - Students worked individually or with a partner to read first person accounts of the slave trade. As they read each account, they filled in facts on a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer was the advantages and disadvantages of the slave trade for both Europeans and Africans. NHW

Thursday - We went over the graphic organizer from yesterday. Afterward, students used the World History Atlases to complete an worksheet on European imperialism in Africa. This worksheet was for a grade. NHW

Friday - Graded worksheets (from yesterday were handed back). Brief introduction to the Berlin Conference and Scramble for Africa. Students read a handout with 6 major "legacies" of colonization and filled in another graphic organizer (Scramble for Africa) w/ the effects (economic, social & political) of colonization. NHW

Monday - I was out sick. Students exchanged current events articles and answered each others comprehension questions. Afterwards, students began watching a National Geographic video on animals and the environment in Madagascar. NHW

Tuesday - Students finished the video. Final quiz for this semester will be THIS Friday, December 17th. The quiz will be over the physical geography of Africa (study the phys. geo map and countries).

Wednesday - I handed out an emergency split assignment to students - just in case....Afterwards, I gave them a study guide for Friday's quiz. Students looked over the maps and environmental issues in Africa to help them study. Then we played a game to see which team knew the physical features and countries better.

Thursday - ICE DAY = no school

Social Studies Standard for the week: SS7G2: Students will discuss environmental issues across the continent of Africa - water pollution & distribution, poor soil, deforestation & desertification.

Monday - We discussed population density in Africa - why people choose to live in certain places on the continent. Afterwards, we discussed environmental problems and health problems we face in the US to compare these to the problems faced by Africans. Students watched a video clip from SCIS on environmental & health problems facing Africa.
Remember Current Events #3 is due next Monday, December 13th

Tuesday - Discussed the yesterday's video clip. Graded atlast packet from last Thursday. Read and filled in an Environmental Issues chart.
Go to http://www.wwf.org/ and scroll to the bottom. Look for the box at the bottom that says "Find Your Inner Animal". Take the quiz (it's 8 questions & you have to give your email address to take the quiz). Write down which animal you are. We'll talk about this in class in the next several days.

Wednesday - Students completed a chart on Environmental Issues In Africa. Remember to go to wwf.org sometime this week.

Thursday - Students worked in groups on a conservation/non-conservation activity - what happens if we do conserve certain resources, what happens if we (humans) don't. HOMEWORK:: CURRENT EVENTS DUE MONDAY.

Wednesday - We looked at and discussed different types of maps (land use, growing season, rainfall, etc.) of Africa. Afterwards, students read a short article on farming in Malawi and filled in a graphic organizer.NHW

Thursday - We discussed yesterday's article. Afterwards, students completed (and turned in for a grade) a physical map packet - pratice reading different types of maps of Africa using student atlases. NHW

Monday - Students were given a project today - creating a children's government picture book. They were given a handout in class. The handout can be found under the "assignments" section of this blog - if you need an extra or are absent.

Tuesday - I handed out a study guide/list of topics for Friday's test. A copy can be found under the "assignments" section of the blog. We discussed the history topics - students took notes on the study guide as necessary. Afterwards, students were given time to continue workin gon the government picture book project. HOMEWORK: Study for Friday's test and work on children's book - as necessary.

Wednesday - I was absent. Students read a handout from InspirEd titled "Democracy Rising" which explained democracy, the importance of democracy & the challenges & possibilites it faces in Middle Eastern countries. Afterwards, each student wrote a persuasive paragraph (no less than 8 sentences) on democracy in the Middle East. If time allowed, they worked on the government picture book project.
HOMEWORK: STUDY FOR FRIDAY'S TEST AND WORK ON PICTURE BOOK PROJECT

Thursday - I handed back the Middle East Government Chart assignment and we went over it in class. Afterwards, we discussed questions students had about the Study Guide. We also discussed democracy in the Middle East (from Wednesday's assignment). HOMEWORK: STUDY AND WORK ON PICTURE BOOK

Wednesday - New unit/TOC - students received a handout on the Distribution of Power in government (Unitary, Confederation & Federal). We reviewed these terms (students studied these last year as well). Afterwards, we talked about definitions and examples of types of governments (oligarchy, democracy, autocracy). NHW

Thursday - Students read a handout about Democracy in the Middle East. We discussed recent evidence of democracy in selected Middle Eastern countries - females in government, elections, constitutions, mulit-party elections. NHW

Friday - Students worked in the computer lab to fill in a chart on the basics of the governments of selected Middle Eastern countries.

When you get to the World Audit homepage, click on "democracy" at the top, then click on "democracy table" on the left hand side (menu). This is where you will find information on the divisions, democratic freedom and freedom of the press.
INSTRUCTIONS - INFO FOR THE FIRST 4 COLUMNS CAN BE FOUND ON CIA WEBSITE. FIND THE COUNTRY, THEN GO TO "GOVERNMENT". FOR THE "FORM OF LEADERSHIP" COLUMN - LOOK FOR "executive branch" ON CIA THEN WRITE THE TITLE OF BOTH THE "chief of state" and "head of government". FOR THE 3RD COLUMN (type of legislature) FIND LEGISLATIVE BRANCH ON CIA - the type should be listed right under the title. FOR ROLE OF CITIZEN - look @ both the executive and legislative branches to see if elections are held. If someone is elected "by popular vote" then the citizen has a role, if not the citizen does not. Indicate (on your chart) if the citizen has a role in elected the executive branch and/or the legislative branch.

Monday - Students got in groups in class to prepare for tomorrow's class debate.

Tuesday - Students participated in an in class debate. Half of the class had the topic of land (Israeli/Palestinian) and the other half debated Operation Iraqi Freedom (should US have invaded or not). This was our first debate of the year so it was more for practice not for a grade. NHW

Wednesday - We went over the Fact or Opinion worksheet from last week. Then we discussed pros/cons of yesterday's class debate - what to improve for next time. Afterwards, students started a worksheet (w/ article) on the current peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians. NHW

Thursday - Students finished yesterday's worksheet on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Afterwards, they worked with a partner to answer questions about oil production and consumption using charts and graphs. NHW

Friday - Students played a review game of modern Middle East facts (the unit we've been studying). The game was modeled on Speed Dating. NHW

In class today, we filled in a graphic organizer titled "The historical reasons for the establishment of the modern State of Israel". Students used some facts we had previously discussed along with a handout from World Book to fill in the graphic organizer. NO HOMEWORK

Tuesday - Students read a handout on the establishment of Israel (1948) and the events that followed. NO HOMEWORK

Wednesday - Students watched a short video from PBS (Arab and Jew: Return to the Promised Land) and took notes that would support both the Israeli and Palestinian claims to the land. We had a brief discussion afterwards. NO HOMEWORK

Thursday - Students watched video clips on the first Gulf War, the Taliban in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden (from Discovery Streaming Video on line). While watching the clips, students answered comprehension questions. NO HOMEWORK

Friday - I was absent - @ CPR Training. Students read NY Times current events articles & filled in handouts. NO HW

GPS Standard for the week: SS7H2 - The student will analyze the continuity and change in Southwest Asia (Middle East) leading to the 21st century.

Monday - Conference Day - NO SCHOOL

Tuesday - Students received graded assignments (Current Events, Atlas Practice) to add to their notebooks. I checked (and gave a grade) to make sure students had 16 Sponge Page answers. Afterwards, students handed in old notebooks and received a new TOC. Additionally, students received MIDDLE EAST BACKGROUND QUESTIONS as a homework assignment. I will check these Wednesday in class.

Wednesday - Homework check. We went over the correct answers to the homework. Afterwards, students looked @ a World History atlas map of WWI. We discussed it briefly and then looked at a map of Europe & Middle East after WWI.
NO HOMEWORK

Thursday - Students performed a brief skit about Arabs and British in WWI & T.E. Laurence's role.
NO HOMEWORK

Friday - We read and discussed the importance of the Balfour Declaration (1917). Then we did an activity on asking questions. NO HOMEWORK.

Tuesday - All classes went back to the computer lab to work on Monday's assignment. NO HOMEWORK

Wednesday - Last day in the lab - students finished up the assignment from Monday and completed an activity using maps101. NO HOMEWORK

Friday 10/1 - Current Events Report #2 due. Students will share current events stories in class. NO HOMEWORK.
